Our Unique Approach

Our Story & Culture

After being in the industry for more than 21 years and successfully operating our Nectar Family Day Care Service for past 9 years, we finally embarked on the journey of creating a distinct small family-owned kindergarten with ‘Green living’ at the heart of the development of the centre.

We are truly passionate about our work and this reflects within the atmosphere of our small boutique kindergarten. Our kindergarten is carefully designed to ensure the children who step through our doorways have access to a natural & nurturing play-based environment that engages them in holistic learning to reach their full potential throughout their life.

Founders Rukshmani & Sudheer

More than 20 years ago, the concept of a green 'sustainable' centre for children started. Sustainability, mindfulness, healthy eating and creative practices would form the foundation for learning and development of children in care.

As parents themselves, Rukshmani and Sudheer wanted only the best for their children, recognising birth to 9 years was when neuro-pathways, behaviours and creativity was developed - these early formative years being the most important for a child. Coming from India, childcare experiences were different. Care was provided in a "village or community" environment. This helped children develop confidence and healthy behaviours from a young age.

The green centre concept was born, a place where children feel safe, nurtured and are encouraged to grow - a place where each child is recognised and given attention to develop to their full potential.

Rukshmani brings a wealth of experience in managing family day care in both Australia and New Zealand. In addition to her management expertise, she has also worked as an Early Childhood Teacher in kindergarten and preschool settings in both countries. Her professional qualifications include a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood and Education from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce and a postgraduate degree in Computer Science from Mumbai, India.

Sudheer possesses a range of professional qualifications that contribute to his expertise in various fields. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics, a Diploma in Quantity Surveyor and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education. Along with technical, cost management expertise and childcare education and care Sudheer brings his knowledge in the field of sustainability practices and Saatvik Pure System to the centre.

Together, Rukshmani and Sudheer are very excited to introduce greener and sustainable childcare centre to the community and hope to encourage other centres to adopt the green healthy, care living principals.

Our Team and Our Partners

To foster whole-child learning, we have team members who are experienced and qualified to nurture and support each child’s unique learning journey. All of our team members also undergo ongoing educational training to offer your child the best learning experience possible.

Our Community Partners

We have partnered with local community members to provide a variety of resources and experiences that form the rich learning experiences for all children, staff and families. Shop Local, Buy Local is our policy.

The Karrinyup Men’s Shed are building and supplying wooden resources such as rocking chair, benches, wooden toys, different sizes wooden trays, wooden traffic light made locally using materials sourced in Australia. We are exchanging many ideas with each other to create sustainable and durable learning resources for the children. This is our small step towards being locally sustainable at the same time supporting our community. The shed is a project by the Rotary Club of Karrinyup and promote men's mental health by providing an inclusive environment for men to meet, create projects, teach, learn and support each other.

Dr Vidhu, is an Ayurveda Practitioner (Ayurveda for Wellness) holding a Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from India and an Australian qualified Trainer and Assessor. She embarks our journey with her expertise and input in assisting with the development of our Centre menu using food items grown onsite or locally sourced.

Local Aboriginal Community group will visit the centre to provide storytelling sessions to the children and staff, raising awareness of Acknowledgement to Country and dreamtime.

Trisha Fulton from Business Simplified and Oscarle Publishing were commissioned to develop this new website, advice for our edible kitchen garden and our new recipe book which will be available on Amazon in the near future.

Safety & Security

We foster your child’s holistic development while providing a safe, secure environment for learning. Our building and grounds are designed to meet the national safety standards, and includes:

Code press entry for families;
Main entrance monitored by a friendly Team Member;
Team Members background checked; and
Car park cameras for continuous monitoring.

COVID Management Plan

As part of the Level 1 public health and safety measures, early childhood education and childcare services are required to complete a COVID Safety Plan.

COVID Safety Plans help ensure businesses actively mitigate the risks of COVID-19 in line with the best available health advice.

Our core focus is the health, safety and emotional well-being of the children, staff and families. We review our COVID Safety Plan regularly and updated where necessary as health and government advice changes.

COVID Safe Centre

We are closely following guidance from state and local officials and health authorities as we take extreme caution in maintaining a safe, and healthy environment. For us it is important to maintain COVID-safe principles and sensible safety precautions.

We are focusing on COVID-19 health, safety and social measures. This includes good hand hygiene, additional cleaning and disinfection, physical distancing and mask wearing (where required). This will ensure that when new cases occur, the potential risk of COVID-19 transmission is minimised.

Commitment to the Environment

The pressures on our planet’s limited natural resources and the challenge of climate change require prompt and concerted action from us all. We believe that our active and responsible approach makes a significant impact on our current and future generations and on the environment. We make a conscious effort as highlighted below to minimise the impact of our actions that involves connections to nature, create liveable futures and respect for the environment. Our environment plan includes:

Reduce waste, reuse and recycle materials
Reduction of single use plastic
Increase awareness of environmentally friendly products and practices in the Service communities by working with partner organizations that align with our Green Living values
Conserve energy through the use of efficient business processes
Encourage and empower our team of educators, children and families to be responsible, green citizens
Proactively collaborate with environmental leaders and our community at large to implement new ideas & strategies
Use of environmentally friendly cleaners/sanitizers at the centre

Self Sufficiency

We believe that developing self-sufficiency makes us resilient, connects us with people for mutual benefits and also helps to protect our environment and reduce our collective carbon footprint. Self-sufficiency is not only satisfying but gives us sense of achievement and develops our self-esteem and confidence. This is also a great way to teach children to be independent and to offer them practical skills they can use throughout their lives.

Our self-sufficiency program includes:

Growing organic vegetables and herbs in our own Kitchen Garden
Cooking our own meals
Composting household waste and use of green bins to create our own fertiliser
Being water wise – rainwater collection using underground rain water tanks
Insulation, LED lights and Solar power to reduce our energy consumption
Use of natural light to reduce energy consumption where possible
Involve local community for their expertise

Creating a Community

Sharing common goals, interests and attitudes is beneficial for children in their delicate early years as it connects them to their own unique place in the world. Therefore, at Nectar we are working on creating a community that forms reciprocal relationships, builds self-esteem and happiness, and gives every child a foundation to flourish and succeed. It also helps them to learn about themselves, how to tackle challenges, build knowledge, and thrive.
